By sacrificing control in a certain area of the pitch, it allows a team to play two strikers which will often be against two centre backs thus reducing the battle to that of individual skill.

The formation allowed Liverpool to get the best out of two very good strikers; their goals fired them to a 2nd place finish even though they conceded 50 goals, only 3 less than Hull City who finished 16th.

The wide version of this formation ensures attacking presence in the wide areas, with two strikers to cross the ball to. Furthermore, it is very easy for this formation to be turned into the standard which when deployed effectively can be very hard to break down and is a tactic often used by coaches in difficult away games.

The main strength of this variation is in central midfield. With the 4 midfielders, teams will often outnumber their opposition which will give them greater control of the game and a large share of possession.

This control in midfield will then give the full-backs the opportunities to push forward further to try and contribute to an attacking move.

Therefore the supply to the strikers will not only come from the central midfielders but also the full-backs giving the attacks more variety and therefore making the entire attacking unit harder to defend against.

A common occurrence when playing a single defensive midfielder is the centre-backs splitting, the full-backs pushing up the pitch and the defensive midfielder dropping in between the centre-backs to receive the ball and start the attacks.

All a team has to do is man-mark the defensive midfielder and press high on the full-backs. A great example of this is Steven Gerrard at the start of the season.

The year before he had re-invented himself as the deep lying player maker, his legs were not what they once were and this forced him to adapt his style of play.

The main weakness of this formation is the lack of a central midfield, which in turn could lead to the opposition gaining complete control of the game.

This formation is usually quite attack minded, especially if the fullbacks push too far forward, which increases the chance of them being caught on the counter attack.

The main weakness of this formation comes in the wide areas. The lack of wingers or wide midfielders means the fullbacks are very exposed to attacks down their side and also it means the when they do push forward to help with an attack they can be exposed on the counter attack.

The lack of width also means the attacks can become somewhat predictable and if the opposition play two defensive midfielders, there will be very little space in the middle of the pitch and no options in the wide areas thus limiting the focus of the attack.

The success was based around 3 important factors: Suarez and Sturridge playing alongside one another, Sterling playing in the number 10 role and Gerrard operating as a deep lying playmaker.

The deadly duo scored 52 goals in the league alone; while Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling chipped in with 23 goals between themselves.

The conceded 3 against Cardiff City but scored 6, they conceded 2 against Manchester City but managed to score 3. They conceded 50 goals and finished in 2 nd place, whilst Chelsea in 3 rd only conceded The two most important qualities for defensive midfielders are positional awareness and accurate passing.

Their job as the sole defensive midfielder is to start attacks by playing the ball forward towards the more creative players and to protect the back four from oncoming attacks.

Their role allows the full-backs to push forward into attacking positions and when they do that they must be very disciplined and not push too far forward as this may lead to them being open and vulnerable to a counter-attack.

In order for them to fulfil their role the attacking midfielder must have great game awareness as they must know when to run in behind and when to drop deep to receive the pass from the midfielder.

Thoughts are welcomed on what to do with him. I am asking a lot of my players, particularly in midfield and at full back.

I employ a high line too, so my defenders all have a decent amount of pace and positioning. On top of this, my DLP and my CM will often go and close down wide players if the opposition are building a more patient attack.

So far so good, but if I get promoted as I should from this position, next season will be a much tougher prospect. Any thoughts on how this might be improved?

Anything I should watch out for? The HB role is a real eye-opener. I remember years ago people trying to get a DM to do exactly what you have your HB doing, through crazy slider manipulation and whatnot.

Great to see it working for you. Been struggling to get this setup to work defensively trying most roles but this have been working great for half a season now.

Tried the narrow with Juve in FM13 and I had a lot of problems with it. Lots of low-scoring draws. I think quality attacking fullbacks are absolutely necessary to make this work.

First, I made a couple of tweaks to the roles. The idea here is to pen the opponents in their half, with a high line utilising the offside trap.

I started a new save, with the same team Silkeborg. My first game was a friendly defeat, which left me fearing the worst.

Since then though, things have picked up. I even managed to go four games on the spin without conceding a goal. The joker in the pack is still the AM.

He appears to see little of the ball, comparitavely, though he is chipping in with goals. The switch to attacking has helped me wonders.

Conceding is still a slight issue, but scoring a lot more. I also went from balanced to fluid which seems to have helped a huge deal too.

By using a TM this will also give your WBs something to aim for when they put those crosses in. Depends if you have the right players to make it work of course.

Keep us informed how you get on as I am looking to use this sort of tactic soon once I get the correct players in.

First of all, average positions. You can quite clearly see here how the HB drops very deep and the WBs push on. Here are the match stats. Things for me that stand out are how many crosses the WBs are putting in, as well as how few passes the AM is making.

I am also trying to piece together a Narrow Diamond formation, its one I have always fancied having a crack at but have never been able to work out.

That is I think, until now. The other way I get a little more width in my side is using player instructions, my CFs is encouraged to shoot less, move out wide and run wide with ball, I also usually have him man mark the opposing LB if its a back 4 so when we are out of possession and turn it over he is usually able to recieve the ball and get a chance to run at the LB with a wide open space behind him.

The creative key is the DLPd and Enganche duo, both are fantastic at keeping possession ticking over and playing through balls in behind the opposing defence.

Defensivley I had also used a HB originally in the DM position, but found he dropped to deep and left me a man light in midfield which was meaning I was being overrrun by mediocre sides, as an Anchor man he is much more able to sweep up the trouble and still be a productive cog in the midfield machine.

Therefore, moving only one full-back at a time would make sense. I will test this and report back. One of the centre-backs would push forward into midfield, occasionally forming a diamond and temporarily altering the formation to a You will score lots of goals because of the five attacking players and the two central midfielders making runs into the box. If it was Torres put through by Cesc against Portugal I think he would have scored. Finally, I use 'play wider'.

I do have to defend a few crosses as I have no natural protection for my WB to help double up and quash crossing opportunities, butits a willing sacrifice as I find my Diamond 4 are running every game and creating lots and lots of chances.

First, how is your distribution from the back? I noticed you have Burdisso as a LD. Do you find he gives the ball away a lot?

Especially against teams that play two up front. How is the Anchorman in terms of this? How does he perform on the defensive side?

If you read the thread then you can create the tactic because all the settings are listed rather than being lazy. Having my DLP on defend also helps as he drops in to give options.

He also gives assistance to my anchorman who has more liscene then a HB to move forward to win back possession and tick the passing over.
